Shane Smeltz
"A City Stands United"
|
PLAYER PROFILE |
As arguably the hottest goalscoring property in the Hyundai A-League, Shane Smeltz was at the forefront of Miron Bleiberg’s mind when he began to compile his wanted list. Two stellar seasons with the Phoenix appeared to represent the realisation of Shane’s potential and the United Head Coach has secured the services of a striker heading for his prime. Born in Germany but raised on the Gold Coast, Shane sees his shift to the Gold Coast from Wellington as something of a homecoming. There’s little doubt though that one of the league’s top marksmen has relocated for professional reasons and sees the move as one which can bring him on-field success. Lethal from any range and able to lead the frontline as a traditional centre-forward, Shane will be key to United’s ambitions this season. The lethal striker capped an outstanding final season with Wellington Phoenix by collecting no less than three top honours at the Hyundai A-League Awards Night. The Johnny Warren Medal (Player of the Year), Golden Boot Award (leading goalscorer) and Goal of the Year were all bestowed on Shane as he farewelled the Phoenix and looked ahead to a bright future on the Gold Coast. |
